Overview

Despite recent poor results in the National Student Survey, Leeds remains one of the most popular universities in the country, fielding nearly 70,000 applications last year. It occupies a 100-acre campus a short walk from the city centre. The university's green spaces and modern buildings are interwoven with Victorian grandeur and 1960s brutalism, giving the campus a definite charm. Leeds has shifted back to a focus on face-to-face learning post-pandemic, and its careers service has a great record of supporting students from under-represented backgrounds. Performance is strong when it comes to students achieving good degree classifications and alumni going on to secure high-skilled jobs, all while the university consciously focuses on its renowned Access to Leeds initiative to widen participation. Of last year's intake, around 25% of students received a contextual offer - many courtesy of this scheme. Leeds has a range of both catered and non-catered rooms available and guarantees an offer of accommodation to all first-year students.

Paying the bills

Students at Leeds can access a range of financial assistance schemes. The Leeds bursary is automatically available to all students who come from homes with an income of up to £36,000. At this threshold, students receive £1,000 in support per year, rising to £1,500 when income drops below £30,001 and £2,000 when it is up to £25,000. The total sum that the university spent on undergraduate bursaries last year added up to £10.3m. There is also a financial assistance fund in place at the university to help combat short-term financial issues, with students able to access up to £4,500 to help with living expenses. This money cannot be offset against either university-provided accommodation or tuition fees. Leeds has a range of halls dotted throughout the campus and further afield. Prices for non-catered accommodation start at £4,704 for a 42-week contract, with the top-end shared studio flats in Central Village setting students back £10,906 for a 43-week tenancy. Catered rooms are also available, 다파벳가입 costing from £7,809 to £10,213, both for 39 weeks.

What's new?

The university's Helix space is still in its relative infancy and serves as a place for all digitally focused activities. It has an abundance of collaborative areas for students across all faculties to pursue their academic and personal creative, innovative and entrepreneurial projects. The Bodington Football Hub has recently opened just a 15-minute drive away from campus and features three full-size 3G floodlit pitches, complete with a pavilion, changing rooms and a cafe. Four new Futures Institutes are being created with the goal of delivering research and education to address some of the most pressing global challenges. Leeds hopes these institutes will become recognised centres of excellence when it comes to driving world-changing research in climate, health, education and society. When they're not shaping the future, students can relax in Crossroads, a new multifunctional space within the huge Leeds University Union. Crossroads is an e-sports and gaming lounge equipped with computers, consoles, tabletops, board games and cards. The university is also developing further degree apprenticeship programmes that will add to its already popular portfolio; there are currently around 600 apprentices at Leeds.

Admissions, teaching and student support

The university is one of the more socially inclusive institutions within the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, due in part to the success of its Access to Leeds scheme. Contextual offers (reduced by two A-level grades or equivalent) are given to students who meet Leeds's criteria for the scheme and complete its online module of study skills and a 1,250-word subject assignment. One-grade reductions are automatically given to applicants from low-participation neighbourhoods who don't apply through Access to Leeds. The university's Curriculum Redefined initiative continues to develop, with 80 new 'transformative educators' appointed to support the scheme. Leeds believes that the unique curriculum and redesigned programmes provided by the initiative will help its students develop knowledge and skills that will enable them to make a positive impact as global citizens. Leeds has pivoted somewhat and shifted its focus back to face-to-face teaching, with online learning used 'to enhance the learning experience' rather than replace traditional in-person teaching methods. There is a dedicated team within the careers service that helps students with limited access to previous careers advice who are at risk of poor graduate prospects. Working collaboratively with the Leeds University Union, the university signposts students to guidance and support about topics such as sexual consent, drugs, alcohol and discrimination. First-years are also encouraged to complete a Supporting Healthy Relationships course online.
